The Innovative Schools Summit in San Antonio, Texas, was an inspiring and energizing experience, offering practical, research-informed strategies educators can immediately apply in their classrooms and schools. The conference brought together passionate educators committed to supporting the whole child while sustaining their own well-being.

One of the strongest themes throughout the summit was self-regulation. Sessions emphasized helping students recognize, understand, and manage their emotions, with concrete tools that support focus, emotional control, and resilience. Closely connected were sensory-informed practices, which demonstrated how thoughtful use of movement, sensory supports, and classroom design can significantly improve student readiness to learn.

Another key focus was social-emotional learning (SEL). Presenters shared engaging, developmentally appropriate strategies that integrate SEL seamlessly into daily instruction. These approaches not only strengthen relationships but also promote empathy, collaboration, and a positive classroom climate.

Educators also explored practical strategies for fostering student engagement, including interactive instructional methods, relationship-driven practices, and techniques that increase motivation and participation across diverse learning needs. These sessions reinforced the idea that engagement thrives when students feel safe, supported, and valued.

Importantly, the summit did not overlook the well-being of educators. Sessions on self-care and stress management provided realistic strategies teachers can use throughout the school day to stay balanced, energized, and effective, acknowledging that sustainable teaching begins with caring for oneself.

Overall, the Innovative Schools Summit was a meaningful learning experience that reaffirmed the importance of holistic, compassionate, and practical approaches to education.  Thank you to MAME and the committee members of the MAME Professional Fund for their generous support so that I may attend this summit.
